Tonight, I walked on the beach and the moon enchanted me with her twinkling luster of moondust bespeckling the quiet waters.
I stood still to take in the captivating image of her, Lady Luna, just smiling and shining down upon everything in sight. From where I planted my feet in the cool evening sand, the moonlight dusted a path from shore to Heaven and I felt sure that if I tried, I could tread across the glow cast on the water and arrive safely in the moon’s embrace. Her soft, wide, sparkling beauty urged the soulful mystic within me to kiss her.
A full moon is an especially sacred window of energy that should not be missed by anyone seeking to gain something, lose something, or change something. Also, if you are not seeking to gain something, lose something, or change something, please check your pulse…you may be in a spiritual coma.
The moon is not just a pretty nightlight in the sky. She is the beacon to the waves in the very ocean I am blessed to live with, the mother to the menstrual cycle of most women, the source of madness that coined “lunatic” as a label for insanity, and the reason why werewolves grow fur in the movies.
Beyond the typical assignments, the moon has another powerful gift to bestow upon us that often goes unrecognized in the mainstream population: she can give, take, and shift things in your life at the mere request of it.
If this sounds absurd or crazy to you, I’m okay with you thinking that. I really am. Call me a lunatic. I’m one happy little lunatic, then! It is not necessary for you to believe me so much as it is for me to share this so that those who wish to try this truth out can confirm it for themselves. The moon moves energy. The moon is powerful. The moon is a direct connection to God, or Source, or Goddess/Universe/Nature/Whatever You Wish to Call It. Yes, the moon can help you do stuff, kids.
In ancient cultures across the globe, including Celtic, Native American, and many more, the moon was a standard and sacred tool for manifestion. If you needed or wanted something brought in or taken away in your life, you would perform a sacred ritual and to make it as powerful as possible, you would call upon the energy of the moon. People would literally wait to conduct important requests and ceremonies for a full moon, because her energy was most effective and potent then. Even in modern Judaism, the religious calendar is lunar, not solar, designed in perfect accordance with moon energy.
Although modern culture has shed a lot of the gorgeous ritual and tradition that once permeated daily life long ago, we can still tap into the wisdom and practices that ancient peoples embraced. We can still kiss the moon, and get her to kiss us back.

For me, connecting with the moon is natural and organic in flow. I see her, I adore her, I am mesmerized, I stop and stare in awe and begin to merge my energy with hers.
Things can be happening around me, people can be walking by, and I’ll ignore (possibly not even notice to ignore) their movement and just remain locked in with Luna. Incidentally, I am also one whom you sometimes have to snatch back quickly from walking into street traffic because I am staring at something else, usually a shiny something else. I like shiny things. I’m a faery. I’m easily distracted.
To make a connection with the moon and manifest something in your life, you can honestly do your own thing. There is no right or wrong, provided you harm nobody (yourself included). If you’d like a little help, here’s a bit of helpful structure to just get you started.

I begin by showing my affinity for the moon in a kiss.
I find a place to be, outdoors will always be best, and I get centered and breathe smoothly and mindfully. This does not require special shamanic powers or any sort of yoga training, by the way–this is breathing. You can do this. You already do this. Just slow your breathing down, keep it at a consistent pace, and ideally, in the tradition of yogic breathing (which is proven in medical studies to calm the brain and relax the senses and nervous system), if you can, make your exhale a bit longer than your inhale. So your breathing might go iiinnnn….oooooouuuuuuutttttttt. Iiiiiinnnnn………oooooooooouuuuuuuttttttt.
Once I feel my breathing and my locale are aligned with what I’m doing, I visualize strong, radiant white and/or gold light (gold like the precious metal, not a mustard gold) surrounding me. This effectively protects my energy from other “drifting” energies. I raise both hands to my heart, and “scoop” love from it, then raise my hands to my lips and place a kiss in them with the love. I extend my hands out (as if they were filled with invisible faerydust and I was about to blow it into the air), and I blow the “kiss cocktail” to the moon. Do with this what you wish. For me, it’s a symbolic gesture and it gets me very happily focused on the beauty of the moment, and lends a tangible practice to opening my heart and my energy to the moon’s energy. I’m a shaman, so this doesn’t seem “weird” to me. If it seems “too weird” or uncomfortably strange to you, don’t do that. Do something that resonates with you. Ritual for the sake of it is not half as powerful as ritual that you create yourself. Remember that.
Once I’ve kissed the moon, I think about what I seek to achieve in this moment. These are the glittering guts of the moon ritual.
Tonight, I wanted to clear and expel some negative energy that has been messing with me for days, and I also wanted to infuse the lives of a few people I love (including myself) with blessings and support for new projects and relationships. I made deep “eye contact” with the moon, and felt the energy pouring onto me. In my mind, I silently went through the things I needed to release and clear from myself. One by one, I gave them to the moon. I felt them leave and energetically diffuse out of my body, into the sand, and ultimately dissolve into nothingness.
Once that was done, I sent another heart kiss to the moon, and focused on what I wanted to bring in and create for myself and my loved ones. You can focus on yourself first…just like how on the airplane, you’re guided to first put your oxygen mask on yourself, then assist others. Take care of your spiritual needs, which will make you stronger to tend to the needs of those you love. It isn’t selfish, because you’re actually more capable of giving fully and generously when you have a reserve of your own to draw from.
After mentally naming everything I wanted lunar energy to support for myself and others, I said words of gratitude and I blew a final kiss to the moon.
In the sea breeze whisking my hair about my face, I felt Luna gently kiss my cheek back, a delicate reminder that my prayers had been heard and my requests would be tended to.
Of course, the biggest kiss back is the successful delivery of your requests! Now, a word of caution for the spiritually fresh learners here. We do not ask for things frivolously or for inappropriately selfish or exclusively material purposes. Ask for help with finding a new job soon and you’re on track. Ask for a new Maserati on your doorstep tomorrow, and even the moon will laugh at your lunatic ass.
Tomorrow night is a full moon. Go…kiss her. She’s a romantic at heart, just like me. If you put soul into your kiss, Lady Luna will surely kiss you, your life, and everything you ask her to touch right back.
Jennifer Abeles is a lovely lunatic. She is also the Founder & Editor of Soul Candy, and a practicing shaman who has an ongoing romance with the moon.
Great site. A lot of useful information here. I’m sending it to some friends!
